Description
This book was first published in 1940 as a festschrift for Professor Eoin Mac Neill, professor of early Irish history at University College Dublin. On its publication it was heralded as a seminal collection, spanning many fields of study, and its importance has not diminished in the intervening period. There are fifty studies in all, divided into four groupings: Celtic Languages (twenty-five essays); Archaeology and Prehistory (six essays); Early and Medieval Irish History (fifteen essays); and Folklore (four essays). The essays are brief, yet each can claim to be as important in its field as this collection is to Celtic studies as a whole. The list of contributors, who include many of the most important scholars in the field of Irish history and literature, is an indication of the universally high standard of this collection. The text, moreover, is presented in the original elegant design of its printer, Colm Ó Lochlainn, at the Sign of the Three Candles.
