This is not a book about the Famine; it is a book of the Famine. The story is told here by those who lived through that awful calamity and watched its horrors unfold from day to day and from year to year. Some of them became its victims themselves, by starvation, fever or emigration. Others were present at the greatest natural disaster in Ireland’s history, priests and ministers, Poor Law Guardians and relief committees, resident magistrates, police constables, masters of workhouses, relieving officers and a host of others. All recount their experiences in their own words. The book traces the course of the Famine in eight Poor Law Unions: Sligo, Boyle, Castlerea, Swinford, Ballina, Castlebar, Westport and Ballinrobe, with a number of items on the Claddagh fishermen of Galway. It is so designed that local historians can easily extract a detailed account of what happened in their own towns or parishes. Appendix material includes: Names by area of all those mentioned in letters and documents Relief Committees – listing all members present at meetings Subscription Lists – contributors & amounts Public Works – descriptions of works and numbers employed Workhouses – numbers of inmates, illnesses and deaths Society of Friends Grants – previously unknown details of relief efforts of the Quakers Passengers on Ships from Sligo to New York – lists of names, ages and occupations
