Parliament, Politics and People.
Few civilization can boast (if that is the word) of regions as uncharted and unexplored as those of eighteenth-century Ireland. Huge areas of its parliamentary life and thought are an historiographical blank; the hidden Ireland is today almost as hidden as when Corkery first coined the phrase; examinations of its institutions and social behavior have been superficial or piece-meal; much of the history of the period has fallen into a fatal pattem of partial analysis and unquestioning elaboration- the futile ploughing and re-ploughing of the same furrows. This collection of specially commissioned essays seeks to reverse this pattem by providing crucial, new insights into some of the salient and unexplored aspects of eighteenth-century Irish history.
