Stephen Callaghan documents over 100 memorials at Kilcomin medieval church and graveyard, near Shinrone in south Offaly. This site is where St Cuimin founded a monastery in the 7th century. Today the site contains the ruins of the medieval church with a surrounding wall and coffin stand. There memorials date from the 18th century to the modern day. Some memorials from the 18th and 19th century illustrate excellent examples of stone carving which have been photographed at night to bring out their exquisite details. Other memorials from the 20th century take the form of Celtic style crosses, which show wealth and status. The fragment of a 15th century cross slab shows how the place has been a site of burials for many generation.
