James P. Cullen

Congratulations to our member Jim Cullen who as a retired army officer in the American Army participated in what ultimately was a successful effort to overturn the procedures adopted with alleged terrorists prisoners in the United States and to return to the Geneva Convention. Mr. Cullen was in the White House shortly after President Obama’s Inauguration for the completion of the documentation necessary to restore the Geneva Convention.  Our congratulations to him on his work over the past four years to see the rule of law prevail. He has long been a supportive member of OHAS.

Deceased members

Our sympathy to the family of Sylvia Courtney on the loss of Sylvia recently. Sylvia Courtney was a strong member of the Society when she lived in Tullamore and contributed to the archives and research by completing an index of the Church of Ireland records for Tullamore Parish.  Our sincere sympathy to her family and we salute her for her efforts on behalf of Offaly History.

TULLABEG COLLEGE HISTORY VOL 2 LAUNCH RAHAN 2 MARCH 8.00PM

Last year Fr. Laheen published his first book on Tullabeg in which he told the history of the College as far as the year 1860.  In this second book, Tullabeg: a Century of Service (1814-1914), he traces the growth of the College until it became a most distinguished establishment both in academic and sporting successes. He also recounts the sad history of how these successes were brought to an abrupt end.  Tullabeg eventually became a novitiate for which purpose it had been originally erected by Fr. Peter Kenney seventy years previously.  While the Irish Jesuits continued the apostolate of education in other places, Tullabeg became a house of spiritual formation not only for the novices but also for tertian fathers until the First World War brought its own changes not only to Tullabeg but to the whole of Europe.  The book is generously illustrated by pictures many of which have never before been printed.

The book will be launched by Mr. Michael Byrne, the Secretary of the Offaly Historical and Archaeological Society in the parish hall, Rahan, on Monday 2 March at 8p.m. The author, Fr. Laheen and the publisher, Mr. John O’Brien from Limerick, will also be present.
